Router Shopping Chronicle

经常断线 由于放在我的房间 爹妈那边接收的情况也不乐观 又由于我想试试高端洋气的DDWRT(其实这个是主要原因 但是后来入手之后却没有怎么用哎 不过是后话) 于是踏上路由选购之旅

于是再次准备下单 脑残再问SOFUNJJ Buffalo(原谅我至今不会拼这个单词 输入法又打不出正确的中文) 回答做工尚可 于是再再次搜索!

The rip-off TPLINK router bought at the DR supermarket, two hundred plus actually paid, seventy yuan actually worth, has been getting more and more useless

Speaking of this TPLINK router, I really must roast Tesco. Why on earth are 3C products priced so outrageously there? But since it went on a shopping card, I grudgingly accepted it. We’ll leave that aside for now

It drops offline all the time, and since it sits in my room, reception on my parents’ side isn’t looking good either. Plus I wanted to try the posh, high-end DDWRT (actually this was the main reason, though after I got the router I barely used it, sigh, but that’s a story for later). And so I set out on my router-shopping journey

The initial range of choices ran from ASUS all the way to ASUS. Weighing budget and looks together, I fell for an N12 router selling for two hundred plus. That’s right, that one, the ASUS RT-N12 B1. Operating on the principle of understanding absolutely nothing, I was about to place the order, but then I thought of my straw to clutch at, SOFUNJJ

So I asked, and it turns out routers around two hundred kuai barely differ, and sofun recommended the brand Netgear too. So I opened Taobao again and searched, and found a whole pile of Netgear JNR-series routers. But I found… found… the main chip isn’t even the crab brand! Bound to be a trap, right… And as a proud member of the looks-first club, I didn’t care for that big row of marquee lights either

That’s right, the NETGEAR JNR3210 and JNR3000. The selling point of these two seems to be gigabit ports… but on the 10M broadband at home, what the hell would I do with gigabit ports!!! Gigabit my foot!!!

Later I gathered that the JNR series seems positioned for entertainment, and my gut said the build quality had to be a trap, so I moved up to browse the WNDR series (yes! The budget! The DDWRT! All completely forgotten!)

On top of that I’d seen a blog say the WNDR3300 series was excellent, so I started browsing. But the 3300 was flat-out beyond my means, gah! If I could afford that I’d have gone for the ASUS N16 instead! (ASUS diehard fan. ASUS, hope of mankind. ASUS, good for ten more years)

So my first crush was the WNDR3700, which had pretty much every feature I wanted (P.S. somewhere in the picking process I got the itch for router downloads and FTP as well. As it later turned out, I had no clue how to use such posh high-end features, gah, IQ in shambles)

So once again I readied the order, and like a moron consulted SOFUNJJ once more, about Buffalo (forgive me, to this day I can’t spell that word, and my input method won’t even produce the proper Chinese). Verdict: build quality passable. So I searched yet-yet again! Instantly fell for the WZR-HP-G300NH2. One more look and every feature I wanted was there, DDWRT (yes, I’d remembered it again), FTP, decent signal too, and above all, it’s good-looking. So, purchased

Also, Tmall, which had the lowest online price at the time, wasn’t back from holiday yet, so I gritted my teeth and bought it on Yixun for 379, calling it peace of mind (self-consolation, don’t you dare call me out)

And with that, router shopping concluded

To sum up

  1. Budgets. Ah, better just forget the budget

  2. Manufacturers, you simply must make your products good-looking!

  3. Marquee lights: a hard no

  4. Never shop during Chinese New Year

  5. That’s all. I just felt four was unlucky
