At Point Reyes we saw tule elk, standing in the dry grass off the road, the ocean somewhere behind the haze.

We pulled over and stayed until the sun was gone. The light left the grass first, then the sky went pink, and the elk turned to silhouettes, their antlers still holding the last of it.
