Cedar Point: my roller coaster riding log
A day of binging twelve roller coasters. Some good, some bad. Steel Vengeance left a silly smile on my face; Raptor tried to shake my brain out of my skull.
I went to Cedar Point this September. The park wasn’t too busy on Friday, so I took the chance to ride twelve roller coasters and push myself to the limit. Here’s how they felt.
Millennium Force
Rather fast, rather smooth, and a pretty well-rounded one.
A lot of up and down, a lot of twists, and the airtime is actually pretty long, about two minutes.
Oh, and add the 15 minutes I spent stuck at the top of the first peak for a safety check. Reassuring, though the staff’s comically slow climb up was an experience in itself. I think my actual airtime was 17 minutes.
- Overall
- 8/10
- Ride feel
- Fast. Without feeling deliberately thrown around. Few weightless moments.
- Smoothness
- Smooth. It feels smooth even at that speed.
- Design & novelty
- Familiar. More of a regular roller coaster, but still worth trying.
Siren’s Curse
I can’t figure out the connection to a siren, but this ride is smooth enough and has the right amount of thrill.
This feels like one of the park’s new centerpieces. The tilt is the key. From my seat in the first row, the tilt toward vertical combines thrill, visual impact, and that feeling of not quite knowing what comes next. (Well, riders probably know what’s coming. I just need to feel it.)
The seat is very comfortable and supportive, especially during the tilt, when my whole body weight presses against the restraint in front. And the ride itself is so smooth, it feels like it’s magnetic.
The speed is only okay-ish, not fast, but enough. It’s a short ride, but that doesn’t stop me from giving it a thumbs-up. A very big thumbs-up.
- Overall
- 9.5/10
- Ride feel
- Exciting. Just the right amount, without needing more speed.
- Smoothness
- Exceptional. The smoothness is the dominant impression.
- Design & novelty
- Novel. I’ve never ridden something like this before.
Top Thrill 2
Stupid fast, stupidly fun, and a goofy design that makes it unique.
When I said Millennium Force was fast, I was wrong. This one is much faster.
There’s this enormous, almost U-turn shape, but the radius at the top is actually small. It looks almost impossible. But it made it. Riding through it, I finally understood the charm.
While smoothness isn’t its thing, I still got off feeling satisfied. The roughness somehow takes me back to those older racing machines. The seat on the right is worth trying for that outer-edge feeling through the twist.
- Overall
- 8.5/10
- Ride feel
- Wild. It feels rigid, but it’s stupidly fun.
- Smoothness
- Rough. But rough with a character.
- Design & novelty
- Goofy. That’s what makes it unique.
Steel Vengeance
It looks like an old wooden coaster, but this 2018 rebuild gets both the retro feel and the modern design right.
I like wooden coasters and hybrids for the nostalgia and the feeling of moving through the timber, despite the expected discomfort. The cramped seat and low backrest here are familiar, too, with my usual urge to double-check the restraint, thinking of my neck and back.
But the moment the ride starts, none of that seems to matter. The first thing to greet me is the view over Lake Erie. These wooden-looking coasters really do get the best locations.
Then the hills and little twists draw me into the ride itself. Toward the end, I’m weaving through the wooden framework, and at one point the waiting line feels close enough to be part of the experience. For something that looks so huge and intimidating from outside, it feels surprisingly intimate from inside.
There’s plenty of airtime, and I feel guided by a gentle hand. Plus, those last two waves put an unexpected silly smile on my face.
I was surprised to learn it’s a 2018 hybrid rebuilt from part of Mean Streak’s wooden structure. I think it keeps that old character very well, and the modern design does it justice.
- Overall
- 9.5/10
- Ride feel
- Playful. Relatively fast, with just the right amount of ups, downs, and twists.
- Design & novelty
- Surprising. Passing through the structure makes a huge coaster feel intimate.
- Smoothness
- Smooth. Very smooth, despite what I expected when I first sat down.
Maverick
Plenty of twisting and throwing around, but none of the thrill for me.
At first sight, Maverick looked past its prime. It had that ’90s-coaster feel, reminding me of a time when they knew how to make it fast but hadn’t quite figured out how to make that speed feel good.
Then it raced up the first hill instead of making the usual slow climb. Okay, maybe I liked this one. A no-bullshit roller coaster.
But then it kept twisting and throwing me here and there. The seat felt awkward, and my head kept getting pulled away from the seat back. I got off feeling dizzy. I didn’t feel the thrill. I didn’t feel the speed. I didn’t feel the smoothness.
- Overall
- 5/10
- Ride feel
- Dizzying. Plenty of movement, but no thrill or sense of speed.
- Design & novelty
- Uneven. I liked the fast first climb, but not the constant twisting that followed.
- Smoothness
- Jarring. The changes of direction felt like being thrown around.
Magnum XL-200
A little old, not very smooth, but fast and carefully designed.
I like the train’s old-fashioned design: the angular white nose, dark windshield, and striped panels along the sides. It reminds me of Disneyland’s PeopleMover, with that imagination of the future in the past.
Well, it does date back to 1989, almost 40 years ago. The slow first climb takes longer than expected, but leaves time to enjoy the view over Lake Erie before the speed kicks in.
Once it gets going, it still feels fast. From that slow, scenic climb, the ride runs over hills, through tunnels, and around the turn by the beach. I think that progression is why it feels carefully designed. It isn’t smooth, but there’s enough to enjoy that the roughness doesn’t take over the experience.
- Overall
- 7.5/10
- Ride feel
- Fast. There’s a clear change of pace after the slow climb.
- Design & novelty
- Thoughtful. The scenic build-up and the faster run that follows give the ride a clear progression.
- Smoothness
- Rough. Noticeable, but it doesn’t dominate the experience.
Gemini
A surprisingly smooth red-versus-blue race, with plenty of little twists to enjoy.
With that wooden frame, I went in with high expectations, and it didn’t disappoint.
I like the red team, blue team racing idea it offers. Having another train alongside provides something to watch and makes the changes in speed feel more dynamic and interesting.
The course alternates stretches of hills with more level turns, and that change of pace also feels well designed. It’s very smooth. The final banked turn keeps the sideways push low, another plus.
I’m surprised to say this about a roller coaster, but between the racing, the turns, the changing sense of speed, and the tracks splitting near the end, there’s enough to do and look at to keep me occupied throughout the ride.
It also reminds me of another favorite at Six Flags Magic Mountain, also a wooden-looking, side-by-side racing coaster. I like both.
- Overall
- 7.5/10
- Ride feel
- Playful. Fun little twists, even without much sense of speed.
- Design & novelty
- Engaging. The red-versus-blue race adds something to watch throughout the ride.
- Smoothness
- Smooth. I was pleasantly surprised.
Iron Dragon
Surprisingly relaxing, with a little swing over the water to keep it interesting.
After eight intense rides, Iron Dragon was a good change of pace. It might seem ordinary, but I actually enjoyed having something this relaxing.
I like the small-cabin concept. The cars hang beneath the track and can swing outward as the train turns, so the cabin itself becomes part of the movement. That gives the twists a different character, and the little swing near the end was especially fun.
The section over the lagoon offers a good view of the water below. Between that setting and the swinging cabins, there’s more to enjoy than I expected from a ride that feels this kid-friendly.
- Overall
- 7/10
- Ride feel
- Relaxing. Mixed into an intense day at Cedar Point, this provides a welcome breather.
- Design & novelty
- Interesting. The hanging cars make the turns feel like a little swing.
- Smoothness
- Okay. Reasonably smooth.
Raptor
Plenty of movement, very little comfort, and no thrill to make up for it.
Another classic—no, a typical ’90s roller coaster. Comfort seems to have been outside the design brief. Getting my brain out of my skull, however, seems to have been a priority.
The seats hang beneath the track, leaving feet dangling through the loops and corkscrews. There’s plenty of freedom for the legs; my head, meanwhile, kept finding both sides of the shoulder restraint. Even my ear hurt afterward. All that movement, and still no thrill.
The dangling-feet concept already feels familiar from other Six Flags parks, so that alone doesn’t add much novelty anymore. What stayed with me was the discomfort.
- Overall
- 4/10
- Ride feel
- Unsatisfying. The intensity never turned into enjoyment.
- Design & novelty
- Familiar. The inverted setup no longer feels novel.
- Smoothness
- Rough. Repeated head-banging against the restraint.
Valravn
A smooth, thrilling dive coaster, even if the idea is no longer new to me.
I rode a similar dive coaster at SeaWorld San Diego a few years ago, so the concept doesn’t have the same novelty this time. But the pause at the edge before dropping straight down still works. The stop and release feel well judged, and the view straight down adds plenty of thrill, especially from the first row.
The unusually wide train is part of the experience: eight seats across is a lot of people to have in one row. During the rolls, the outer seats sweep farther around the train’s center. My seat-choice advice: an edge seat for more thrill; the center for a steadier, more directly up-and-down feeling.
There’s also a second elevated section followed by another substantial dive, which is a plus for me. The ride has more to offer after that first drop, and it feels very smooth throughout.
- Overall
- 7/10
- Ride feel
- Thrilling. The pause before the plunge makes good use of the height and view.
- Design & novelty
- Familiar. An established dive-coaster concept, with a second substantial dive that adds to the experience.
- Smoothness
- Smooth. Very smooth, including the stop and release.
Cedar Creek Mine Ride
A long ride in a peaceful setting, more fun for the kids nearby than for me.
I thought this would be a nice little ride to relax on. But the turns felt forced, pushing me hard from one side to the other instead of rolling naturally through the curves. A little swing can be fun; this just didn’t have the right feel.
The length is a plus: there’s more ride here than expected. The trees also give it a pleasantly tucked-away, tranquil setting. Both help, even if the motion makes it hard to settle in and enjoy them.
Then again, maybe my expectations don’t matter all that much. The kids in the rows in front of and behind me seemed to be having an extremely good time. So, well, maybe this one was doing its job. Still 5.5 out of 10 from me.
- Overall
- 5.5/10
- Ride feel
- Forced. The turns pushed too hard from side to side.
- Design & novelty
- Scenic. A tranquil wooded setting and a substantial ride.
- Smoothness
- Abrupt. The movement lacked a natural flow through the curves.
GateKeeper
An ordinary, good-quality ride with a gliding feel and a great lake view.
Last ride of the day. With the seats out on either side of the track and nothing beneath the feet, it feels a little like a manta swimming through the air. It’s relatively smooth, and there’s a very good view of Lake Erie right alongside.
The wide train turns onto its side to pass through the narrow openings above the park entrance. Bonus points for those. Overall, an ordinary, good-quality ride, but not something I’d call a must-try.
- Overall
- 7/10
- Ride feel
- Gliding. A manta-like swimming sensation.
- Design & novelty
- Interesting. The wide train turning through those narrow openings is a nice touch.
- Smoothness
- Good. Relatively smooth throughout.
Millennium Force
Siren’s Curse
Top Thrill 2
Steel Vengeance
Maverick
Magnum XL-200
Gemini
Iron Dragon
Raptor
Valravn
Cedar Creek Mine Ride
GateKeeper
