934A 300SL and Two 934s

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz

Porsche

Exoto · 9 IMSA · Moretti

I have always liked the long, rounded shape of the 300SL. This white CMC Roadster has a red interior; through the open door, the pale steering wheel and metal dashboard are fully visible. The slender chrome trim outside finds an echo in the instrument surrounds and little knobs inside. Those touches of shine suit the red and white of this old Mercedes.

The 300SL is better known for its gullwing doors. Its racing-derived tubular frame had sides too high to accommodate conventional doors, so they had to open upward. For the Roadster’s introduction in 1957, Mercedes redesigned the frame’s sides, lowered the sills and revised the rear suspension. It lost the drama of the gullwing doors, but became easier to get into and better suited to everyday driving. Mercedes-Benz

A removable hardtop later became an option on the real car. It is a lovely shape, with a wraparound rear window and a roof curve that sits comfortably above the rounded tail. Fitted here, it frames the red cabin in glass and gives the white more room, making the car look quieter. Seeing the open and hardtop versions together, I want to keep photographs of both. The two Exoto Porsche 934s look much fiercer. Developed from the roadgoing 911 Turbo, the 934 retained many production-car features under Group 4 rules. The roof and windows have familiar outlines, while the arches swell outward and wide tires fill out the rear. At its 1976 introduction, the three-liter turbo engine already made around 485 PS. I like racing cars whose roadgoing relatives are still so easy to recognize. Porsche

The red and yellow pattern on the white number 82 follows the arches and makes the broad rear look especially good. It reproduces Lubrifilm Racing’s 1979 Le Mans entry, which won Group 4 and finished fourth overall. All three cars ahead were 935s, with third place only one lap ahead. After twenty-four hours, this 934 had come that close to an overall podium. Exoto · 82

The MOMO name on the red and yellow number 9 has a connection to the driver himself. Gianpiero Moretti began by having a steering wheel made for his own racing car, then founded MOMO. As the business grew, he kept racing. At the 1977 Silverstone Six Hours, he and Vittorio Brambilla drove this Jolly Club 934 to the GT class win, two laps ahead of their nearest class rival.
