在路上On the Road
A frantic, terrifying angel, sweeping across the road in a rush of wind and fire, bearing down on me at tremendous speed like a cloud, or like the shroud-clad traveler of legend, hurling himself at me across the plain.
I saw his huge, gaunt, crazed face and his gleaming eyes; I saw his wings; I saw his old car shooting out ten million rays of flame; I saw the scorched trail it left burning along the ground; unstoppable, it forced open a passage, through the cornfields, through the cities, burning down bridges, drying up the rivers.
He was like a god of wrath come to the West. I knew Dean had gone mad again. It was all over. The ruins behind him were still smoking. Once more he was crossing the groaning continent westward, and soon he would arrive. We hurried to get a few things ready for him. Word had it he was going to drive me to Mexico.
