We are all familiar with presentations, whether giving them or listening to them. Perhaps you already know what draws people in and what doesn’t. But in case you don’t, here are ten tips to help you deliver a killer presentation: Don’t get too fancy: when presenting you will usually use posters, charts, even PowerPoint. Whatever you use, keep it simple, and don’t pack in a lot of text. The audience came to hear you speak, not to look at slides. Look at your audience: if you don’t know where to look while speaking, here is the answer. Don’t stare at one person; make eye contact with many people. Fail to do that and you won’t hold your audience; you are merely talking to yourself, and plenty of listeners will drift off. Show your personality: even if you are presenting before the whole company or the leadership, you should still let your personality show. Otherwise your report will sound like it was delivered by Agent Smith from The Matrix, and nobody enjoys his presentations. (If you do, you may well be a computer agent yourself, and we will find you) Make them laugh: even if your aim is to educate your audience, you should still get them laughing. I learned this from Guy Kawasaki, and if you have ever heard him speak you will know why. Fundamentally, it keeps their attention focused, and they will learn more than from plain preaching. Talk with your audience, don’t simply tell them: people hate being lectured at, so don’t do it. Converse and interact with your listeners. One simple way is not only to let them ask questions, but to ask them some questions too. Be honest: many people say only what the audience wants to hear, not what it needs to hear. You should tell the truth, even when the audience would rather not hear it; they will respect you for it, and it makes you seem more human. Don’t prepare too much: if you rehearse too many times, your delivery will sound rehearsed too (which is very bad). Granted, you should prepare well enough to know what you are going to say. Your talk should stay fluid, not sound like a recitation. If you ask experienced speakers what not to do, they will usually tell you: don’t rehearse too many times, it makes your talk sound unnatural. Move a little: you probably know you should move while presenting, but you tend to forget to do it. Make a few deliberate gestures, or take a few steps across the stage (not too many). Remember, nobody likes a speaker standing frozen stiff; a bit of movement makes it much easier to draw the audience in. Mind what you say: you usually don’t notice how often you say “uh”, “ah” and filler sounds of that sort, but the audience does. These words grate on the ear; some listeners will even count how many times you say them in total. Be different: without something distinctive about you, the audience will not remember you. When you present, you are in fact building your personal brand, so make yourself stand apart and leave a deep impression. /
