耐Patience
Patience, and a mind undistracted: that is what I heard while watching Rao Zongyi, the master of Chinese classical studies, on the program Dajia.
He is a true master in the field of classical Chinese learning, versed in both Chinese and Western scholarship, at home in past and present alike. He and Mr. Qian Zhongshu are named together as “Rao in the South, Qian in the North,” and he and Mr. Ji Xianlin as “Rao in the South, Ji in the North.”
Unexpectedly, I didn’t lie awake last night. I have always said the life I want is a peaceful, unruffled, unhurried one. But in fact it isn’t so; I keep swinging from side to side. For a stretch I can live, quite simply, the life I want to live, but soon enough I sink back into some knot of feeling or some mood.
The habitual insomnia has been with me a long time, yet last night I slept well, so very well. Because on the face of this old man past ninety, and in the way he spoke, I saw the peace and calm I have always longed for.
It’s time I did something, isn’t it?
