Why Can I Never Study When I Go Home
As far back as 2007 I was already asking myself this question. That’s right, ten years spent as a certified loser were not spent in vain, and today I shall give this worldwide conundrum some serious, earnest thought
I think there are two main aspects. One is a mistaken estimate of one’s own working hours and workload: at the office you can only get through so damn much in a day, and yet you imagine that at home your learning power will be maxed, your efficiency higher than at work? What do you take the warm quilt, the sofa, the PS4, and the mountains of unread idle novels and unwatched films at home for!
The other is the lack of any complete plan for one’s time. On holiday people fall for two common illusions: the holiday is still long, and I will definitely do this tomorrow. Put the two illusions together and, pfft, a holiday in which nothing at all got done drifts serenely past
So: refine the granularity, and set yourself milestones and deadlines. This is extremely important
One, the things to be finished today must be refined into targets as concrete as writing such-and-such part of the PPT, or finishing such-and-such problems on such-and-such page; only targets that specific can bind a person
Two, it takes the resolve and the will of “today I am damn well finishing this, and no sleep and no play until it’s done.” Of course, dear student friends, if you mean to do likewise, remember to ask first what your mothers and elders have arranged. If your parents suddenly decide to take you on a seven-day tour of Hawaii, then no plan, however meticulous, will be of any use, minna-san!
